Removing Pest Damaged Insulation

Various pests will tunnel through and or nest in all kinds of insulation: spray foam, cellulose and fiberglass. These pests include termites, carpenter ants and rats.

Unfortunately, insulation can sometimes hide damage that these pests create. A visual inspection of loose-fill insulation materials may have feces on top, which can be readily seen. However, spray foam can hide the damage that these pests create.

Subterranean termites live in the moist soil and seek to “home” within an environment where they can get water. If a home has not been treated against termites, then they may burrow up into the foam. You may find evidence of these termites with mud tubes coming from the ground and into the wall system. They build these tunnels and look for more areas of moisture. When they find moisture in the wall system, they destroy the walls and create what is called a “carton nest.” The spray foam hides this damage and it must be removed.

Houses in the South require termite bonding. A pest control company will put a pest inspection strip so they can monitor the sill plates to make sure they are not being compromised by these pests.
